Bullying and Hate Speech: Two sides of the same coin?

Hate speech has become a widespread phenomenon in the daily life of young people around the world. However, research that has investigated hate speech among adolescents is scarce. Conceptually, hate speech and bullying share specific characteristics (e.g., imbalance of power, intention to harm), but both constructs also differ in several aspects. In the present keynote, I will describe the overlaps and distinctions of both phenomena and the initial research that investigated the relationship. Finally, the keynote will highlight research gaps that need to be addressed to develop prevention programs to support schools in creating an inclusive and safe school environment where all students can thrive.
