Deevia Bhana
WABF 2027 Keynote Speaker
Deevia Bhana holds the South African Research Chair in Gender and Childhood Sexuality at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where her research explores gender, masculinity and bullying in African contexts. A pioneer in the study of childhood sexualities, her work has directly shaped South African law, contributing to the decriminalisation of consensual sex between 12- and 15-year-olds. Her recent books include Girls and the Negotiation of Porn in South Africa: Power, Play and Sexuality (Routledge, 2022) and the co-edited Gender, Sexuality and Violence in South African Educational Spaces (Palgrave Macmillan, 2021). A senior and highly articulate scholar, Bhana brings a perspective and a region too rarely represented on international keynote stages.
